Curry's 21 points, 12 boards lead Warriors in Game 1, 112-87

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Stephen Curry had 21 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, Golden State’s defense held Luka Doncic in check, and the Warriors beat the Dallas Mavericks 112-87 for a 1-0 lead in the Western Conference finals. Doncic scored 20 points but shot just 6 for 18 and 3 of 10 from deep. He made back-to-back 3-pointers late in the first half to get his team within 54-45 at the break, but Curry and Klay Thompson helped the Warriors pull away in the second half. Game 2 in the best-of-seven series is Friday night at Chase Center,

US Soccer equalizes pay in milestone with women, men

The U.S. Soccer Federation has reached milestone agreements to pay its men’s and women’s teams equally. That makes the American national governing body the first in the sport to promise both sexes completely matching compensation. The federation has announced separate collective bargaining agreements through 2028 with the unions for both national teams. The move ends years of often acrimonious negotiations. One of the main sticking points was World Cup prize money. The unions agreed to pool FIFA’s payments for the men’s World Cup this year and next year’s Women’s World Cup. It will also pool the 2026 and 2027 tournaments.

Cole's OT goal lift Hurricanes past Rangers for Game 1 win

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Ian Cole beat Igor Shesterkin at 3:12 of overtime to help the Carolina Hurricanes beat the New York Rangers 2-1 to take Game 1 of their second-round playoff series. The defenseman’s second career playoff goal capped a late comeback by the Hurricanes, who trailed most of the way. But Sebastian Aho finally pushed one past Shesterkin in the final minutes of the third period to send the game into OT. Then came Cole’s rebound shot, which clipped the stick of Rangers defenseman Ryan Lindgren on the way past Shesterkin. Filip Chytil had New York's lone goal.

Buffalo sports teams offer support at site of mass shooting

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Dozens of players and staff from professional Buffalo sports teams visited the scene of Saturday's mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket, where they laid flowers, dished out food and handed out groceries. The first stop was a group visit to a memorial at the edge of the store’s parking lot, where several players placed flowers in front of cut-outs of doves, each bearing the name of a victim. Buffalo Bills tight end Dawson Knox said he's still trying to wrap his head around the attack that left 10 people dead and three wounded. But he says it hits differently, being there.

Scherzer exits with injury to side, Mets deck Cards 11-4

NEW YORK (AP) — Max Scherzer pulled himself from a start with discomfort in his left side before the New York Mets finished off an 11-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Pete Alonso homered and drove in four runs for the Mets, who improved to 13-1 following a loss. The only time they dropped consecutive games this season was April 10-11. Jeff McNeil had an early two-run single and Alonso snapped a 2-all tie with an RBI single off rookie reliever Jake Walsh in a four-run fifth. Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals. Albert Pujols got two hits to pass Eddie Collins for 10th place on the career list with 3,314.

Dustin Johnson looking to get back on track at PGA

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Jordan Spieth is going for the final leg of the career Grand Slam at the PGA Championship. Dustin Johnson would take any trophy at this point. Johnson has gone 15 months since his last win. A year ago he was No. 1 in the world. Now he's at No. 12. That's his lowest world ranking in more than seven years. They are just part of the storylines as the PGA Championship is set to begin at Southern Hills. With so much chatter about the absence of Phil Mickelson and the prospects of Tiger Woods, the second major of the year unfolds beginning Thursday.

Black club pro hopes to thrive, inspire at PGA Championship

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Wyatt Worthington II returns to the PGA Championship and not much has changed in six years. He remains only the second Black club pro to qualify for this major championship. Worthington is a teaching pro from central Ohio. He is competing at Southern Hills after tying for fourth in the PGA Professional Championship. Worthington sees this week as a chance to play well and a chance to inspire. He says access to golf for minorities is improving. The biggest obstacle is for minorities to get funding to play at the highest level. The only other Black club pro at the PGA was in 1991.

Spieth among PGA favorites in quest for career Grand Slam

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — History is not on Jordan Spieth’s side as he arrives at Southern Hills for the PGA Championship this week. Of the five players who have won the career Grand Slam, none had to wait more than three years for the final leg. But since lifting the Claret Jug in 2017 to add the British Open to his Masters and U.S. Open triumphs, things haven't been easy for the popular 28-year-old Texan. Spieth went nearly four years without a win and plummeted to No. 92 in the world. But with a reworked swing and rising confidence he won last month at Hilton Head and was second at last week's Byron Nelson, making him one of the favorites to finally add the final leg of the Slam to his resume.

EXPLAINER: US Soccer's equal pay play and what it means

U.S. Soccer's agreement with its men's and women's national teams for equal pay has its roots in the past while it looks toward the future. The collective bargaining agreements with the two teams announced Wednesday include identical pay structures and equal distribution of World Cup prize money, something that had been a major sticking point. The United States becomes the first federation in the world to promise matching money going forward.

Rockies rook fouls 1st MLB pitch near family, mom gets ball

DENVER (AP) — Colorado Rockies catcher Brian Serven fouled off the first pitch in his first major league at-bat in the direction of his family sitting behind the plate at Coors Field. And his mother ended up with the ball. No, his mom didn’t catch the ball. It landed in the area they were sitting in, but a fan nearby scooped up the ball instead of the Servens. The fan then handed the ball to Serven’s parents, Laura and Jim. A Rockies communications employee then gave the fan a ball autographed by infielder Brendan Rodgers to complete the deal. Serven went 0 for 2 in his debut, and Colorado beat the San Francisco Giants 5-3.
